Open Letter to Belinda Hassan: Addressing Community Concerns

On Monday, April 22, 2024, we sent a letter to Julianne Gilbert regarding the Pioneer-Burdekin Pumped Hydro Project. Despite numerous follow-ups, Julianne has not responded or met with the residents of Eungella and Netherdale. Julianne, a strong advocate for the project, claims it will boost tourism. However, we've observed the opposite, with local accommodation now being occupied by Queensland Hydro subcontractors, leading to a decline in tourism.

Julianne Gilbert has continually ignored the voices of our community. She has been a vocal supporter of the Pioneer-Burdekin Pumped Hydro Project, despite overwhelming evidence and community feedback highlighting the project's detrimental effects. Julianne has dismissed our concerns, failed to engage with us meaningfully, and has shown a blatant disregard for the well-being of the people and communities impacted. Her actions, or lack thereof, have demonstrated that she is more aligned with corporate interests than the needs and desires of her constituents.

Recently, it was announced that Julianne will not be contending for the position of Mackay. Instead, Belinda Hassan will be running for the member of Mackay for Labor. We extend our invitation for Belinda to visit Eungella and Netherdale and to hear our concerns firsthand. Belinda, we hope you will not follow in Julianne’s footsteps and will take the time to listen to the people you seek to represent.
